Edinburgh's Christmas 2012 season gets going today at 10am, with the turning of the large ferris wheel known as the Edinburgh Wheel, and the first in a series of Christmas light nights this evening.
The lighting-up ceremony is traditionally centred on the iconic Norwegian Christmas tree on The Mound (one of a number of Edinburgh Christmas Light Nights around town).
A giant santa will lead a Christmas Parade onto the Mound to a "Christmas Dream Machine spectacular", a tribute to Edinburgh's history of invention. Illuminations, aerial performance and pyrotechnics will conjure up the dreams of a child.
After the turning on of the Christmas tree lights, a Brazilian Samba Christmas Band will lead a procession from the Mound to St Andrew Square for show with comedy comperes, Edinburgh’s Got Talent finalists and "the fabulous Jon Hicks & Flame Oz fire spectacular".
During the day, there are also christmas food markets and the ice rink in East Princes Street Gardens.
A free Norwegian Carol Service follows the christmas tree lights switch-on.
